LITHUANIA’S MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: I BELIEVE THAT CROATIA WILL BECOME AN EU MEMBER STATE IN THE NEAREST FUTURE
On 13 July, Lithuania’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas received Croatia’s new Ambassador to Lithuania Vladimir Matek. During the meeting, Minister V.Ušackas congratulated Croatia on having formed a new Government and encouraged further active implementation of reforms in the country, aimed at joining the European Union.
“I believe that the new Government of Croatia will manage to face all challenges presented by the EU Accession Negotiations and Croatia will become an EU member state in the nearest future. Lithuania is ready to help your country in every possible way,” said head of the Lithuanian diplomacy.
Minister also thanked the Ambassador for the work of Croatian military personnel in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province and suggested cooperating on NATO issues more actively.
During the meeting with Croatia’s Ambassador, Minister V.Ušackas presented the nomination of Ina Marčiulionytė as a candidate to the post of the Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Lithuania’s goal to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2014-2015.
Croatia’s Ambassador to Lithuania V.Matek resides in Stockholm, Sweden. The Ambassador presented his credentials to the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus on 28 May 2009.
Lithuania and Croatia established diplomatic relations on 18 March 1992.
In 2008, Lithuania’s foreign trade with Croatia amounted to 47.6 million Litas, the foreign trade balance with Croatia was positive and amounted to 10.9 million Litas.
