LITHUANIA’S MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONGRATULATED THE NEW GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER ON ASSUMING OFFICE

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas sent a letter to Guido Westerwelle, congratulating him on assuming office of Germany’s Foreign Minister.

In his letter, Minister V.Ušackas expresses trust that the cooperation between Lithuania and Germany in the political economy and other areas will be even closer in the future.

The Minister highlighted that Germany was an important partner of Lithuania in the EU and NATO, and expressed satisfaction with successful bilateral trade relations. Germany is Lithuania’s third biggest foreign trade partner.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy stressed the importance of 9 November, when the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago gave an impetus to democratic movements throughout Eastern Europe.

Minister V.Ušackas hailed the Lithuania-Germany Forum as one of the most important examples of informal bilateral cooperation and expressed trust that common values, ideas, interests and projects would strengthen these relations.

G.Westerwelle is a German politician, leader of the Free Democratic Party. On 27 September 2009 during the Bundestag election, this party won 14.6% votes and formed a coalition government with Germany’s Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union, headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
