LITHUANIA’S MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BUNDESTAG OF GERMANY DISCUSS ISSUES OF THE EU ENLARGEMENT AND RATIFICATION OF THE TREATY OF LISBON
On 12 February during an official visit to Germany, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with President of the Bundestag of Germany Norbert Lammert. During the meeting, V.Ušackas and N.Lammert welcomed more intensive parliamentary exchange between Lithuania and Germany. The Minister invited the President of the Bundestag of Germany to pay a visit to Lithuania on 6 July, when the millennium of Lithuania’s name is to be celebrated.
Speaking about the issue of ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, V.Ušackas and N.Lammert indicated that Lithuania and Germany shared attitudes towards the enlargement of the European Union.
“The EU has to act with solidarity, lean on strong institutions and strengthen its role in the international affairs. Therefore, ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon is strategically important,” said Minister V.Ušackas.
Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy and the President of the Bundestag of Germany exchanged their opinions on the EU enlargement. Minister V.Ušackas indicated that it was important to maintain the EU open door policy. According to him, this would help the countries of the Eastern neighbourhood to maintain the progress of economic reforms and consolidation of democratic governance.
