Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Zananavičius meets with the UK’s Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union
On 4 October, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Albinas Zananavičius met with the United Kingdom’s Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union Baroness Anelay, who is visiting Lithuania for the first time. The meeting discussed important issues related to Brexit and prospects of the development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and the United Kingdom.
Baroness Anelay highlighted that the UK would remain unconditionally committed to European security also after leaving the EU, as Theresa May said in her Brexit speech in Florence. In addition, the UK’s Minister of State argued that Brexit would open up more bilateral cooperation opportunities in the fields of trade, economy, security, science, innovation and in other areas.
Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister stressed the need for the EU to pursue a united position in Brexit talks and to achieve sufficient progress in all matters directly related to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU as quickly as possible.
“Throughout the negotiations we aim to ensure the rights of Lithuanian citizens who live, work, and study in the United Kingdom, and the implementation of the United Kingdom’s financial obligations to the EU budget in order not to harm the EU’s financial programs that are important for Lithuania, and to avoid legal uncertainty and obstacles in business,” said Zananavičius.
