LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNATIONAL LONDON CONFERENCE ON AFGHANISTAN
On 28 January, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius will take part in the international London conference on Afghanistan. The support of international community to the consolidation of security, welfare and democracy in Afghanistan, as well as the transfer of responsibility for country’s security to Afghanistan’s government will be discussed during the conference.
Representatives from the participating countries of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, from Afghanistan and its neighbours, NATO, the United Nations, the European Union and other international organizations are invited to the conference.
The event will focus on cooperation between the international community and the government of Afghanistan, as well as on the support to Afghanistan’s efforts regarding security guarantees, economic development and the governance of the country.
Representatives of the Government of Afghanistan are coming to London to take part in consultations on individual conditions of transferring the security control in country’s provinces and the reintegration of the insurgents, who have stopped fighting.
At the conference, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs intends to highlight the importance of the projects that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) implements in Afghanistan and will speak up for the expansion of activities of this organization in the territory of Afghanistan.
One of the priorities of the Lithuanian OSCE Chairmanship in 2011 will be strengthening border security in Central Asia in order to combat terrorism, human trafficking, illegal migration and other illegal activities in Afghanistan and its surrounding region.
It is expected that during the London Conference Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzaiand members of the country’s government will present plans for fighting corruption, improving the provision of public services to the residents of the country and making better use of international assistance.
