Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister: ‘We strive to expand economic ties with Brazil’

On 19-20 January, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekešius is visiting the capital city of Brazil, where he is holding meetings with Brazilian officials to discuss bilateral relations. In a meeting with Fernando Simas Magalhães, Undersecretary for Political Affairs of the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil, the officials exchanged their views on prospects for cooperation between the countries in the political and economic fields, and issues of migration.

In a conversation, the officials welcomed the activities of the Consulate General of Lithuania in São Paulo and discussed a possibility to start inter-parliamentary activities and political consultations, as well as the next steps towards the signing of four bilateral agreements in the fields of justice and economy.

“Brazil is Lithuania’s largest trading partner in South America; however, there is still a lot of untapped potential for bolstering trade and economic cooperation,” said Bekešius.

Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister welcomed last year’s decision to allow Lithuanian companies to export fish, fishery products to Brazil.

In a meeting with the Secretary for International Relations in Agribusiness of the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil Tatiana Palermo, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister handed over an official invitation to take part in the exhibition AgroBalt in Lithuania, showcasing the Lithuanian agriculture and food sectors.

"The Brazilian consumer market of over 200 million is interesting for our businesses, so we expect not only a visit of experts, but also of a delegation led by the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture to Lithuania,” stressed the Vice-Minister.

The Chief of the Cabinet of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the main advisor, Professor Carlos Augusto de Azevedo expressed interest in Lithuania’s developing technological infrastructure and in a possibility of holding a mission in 2016.

On 21 January in São Paulo, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister is visiting the Governor’s Office and attending a convention of Lithuanian youth living in Latin American and Canada.
