Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Skusevičius attends the Asia-Europe meeting, calls for continued diplomatic support to Ukraine
On 20-21 November, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius attended the 13th Asian-European Meeting (ASEM) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nay Pyi Taw (Myanmar) and drew the attention of the ASEM partners to the conflict in Ukraine.
“The international community has to speak with one voice and urge Russia to stop escalating the situation, so that Ukraine could enjoy sovereign rights to its territorial integrity and self-determination,” noted Skusevičius, when calling for continued diplomatic support to Ukraine and non-recognition of the annexation of Crimea.
In the meeting, the Lithuania-initiated ASEM dialogue in the field of transport was also presented. The dialogue calls for the implementation of sustainable development projects related to the Asian-European transport links, taking into account the needs for the fight against climate change.
The Vice-Minister also reminded the participants of the meeting about the importance of the continuity of the ASEM initiative in the field of nuclear safety and reaffirmed that Lithuania would contribute to the seminar on the issue in China in 2018. Skusevičius welcomed the work that had begun during the 1st ASEM Conference on Women’s Economic Empowerment in Vilnius in 2017. The work will be continued next year in India.
Established in 1996, ASEM is an informal forum for dialogue and cooperation between 53 partners from both regions. The forum addresses political, economic and cultural issues, with the objective of strengthening the partnership between Asia and Europe. Lithuania joined ASEM in 2004.
