Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister signs a Memorandum of Understanding on Lithuania-Peru political consultations
On 26 October in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekešius and the Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister Néstor Popolizio signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a mechanism for bilateral consultations. The agreement provides for encouraging a political dialogue between Lithuania and Peru, and for mutual cooperation.
The two countries will hold consultations as needed to discuss bilateral, regional and multilateral issues. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister, who is attending a meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and from the EU in Santo Domingo, stressed that Peru was an important partner to cooperate with on various bilateral and multilateral issues, such as climate change, the fight against trafficking in drugs, and human rights protection. The interlocutors highlighted the importance of the people-to-people contact and agreed that tourism development would also help to bring the countries closer together, thus, it would be purposeful to sign an agreement on cooperation in the field of tourism.
Bekešius also called on Peru to appoint its Honorary Consul in Lithuania.
Lithuania and Peru established diplomatic relations on 9 June 1997. Currently, Lithuania has not accredited its Ambassador to Peru. The Peruvian Embassy in Helsinki is accredited to Lithuania. The Honorary Consul Eduardo Alberto Paškevičius Velarde has represented Lithuania in Peru since 2007.
