Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister N. Germanas congratulates the Irish Minister of State on St. Patrick's Day

On 18 March, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas congratulated the Irish Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government John Paul Phelan on St. Patrick's Day.

The meeting discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Ireland, opportunities for their development, and the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union.

As Brexit day nears, the Irish Minister of State thanked Lithuania for its support and solidarity in dealing with the issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. N. Germanas highlighted social and economic issues that could be triggered by the withdrawal process. “Hopefully, we can find a solution that works for everyone,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister.

The Foreign Vice-Minister German noted that the Irish Government had set a good example of working with compatriots living abroad. He also thanked Ireland for the opportunity to teach and learn the Lithuanian language at three Irish schools.

J. P. Phelan was glad that Lithuanians living in Ireland were diligently contributing to the country’s prosperity. An estimated 80,000 Lithuanians live in Ireland.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on 17 March as a holiday in the Republic of Ireland.
