LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER MET WITH DIRECTOR OF THE EU AGENCY FOR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS

On 18 May in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Morten Kjærum, who is paying a two-day visit to Lithuania.

During the meeting, activities of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights were presented in the context of Lithuania’s forthcoming chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), priorities of Lithuania’s chairmanship in the sphere of human rights and cooperation possibilities with the Agency in implementing the programme of the chairmanship were discussed.

The Vice-Minister presented Lithuania’s objectives in the area of the evaluation of the crimes committed by the totalitarian regimes at the EU level.

Cooperation possibilities with the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Agency’s potential activities in raising public awareness about crimes committed by totalitarian regimes were also discussed.

The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights was established on 1 March 2007. The Agency's activities serve to promote fundamental rights and to support the EU institutions and member states in raising the level of protection for everyone in the European Union. It dedicates a lot of attention to combating racial discrimination and xenophobia, to improving the situation of ethnic minorities and promoting tolerance. The Agency is based in Vienna.
