LITHUANIA‘S FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER ENCOURAGES WESTERN BALKAN COUNTRIES TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL COOPERATION
At the meeting of foreign ministers from the European Union and Western Balkan countries on 2 June in Sarajevo, Lithuania‘s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Šarūnas Adomavičius encouraged the Western Balkan countries to strengthen regional cooperation.
“Regional cooperation will demonstrate the determination of the Western Balkans countries to aspire to EU membership”, Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius said at the European Union – Western Balkans High-Level Meeting.
The Vice-Minister also urged the Western Balkan states to use the time before the EU membership for the implementation of the most important reforms.
The agenda of the event included the topics of strengthening the EU membership perspective for the Western Balkan countries, as well as granting the EU visa-free regime to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. The political situation in the region was also discussed.
The Vice-Minister met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj. Forthcoming parliamentary elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as bilateral cooperation were discussed at the meeting.
Vice-Minister Š.Adomavičius said that aiming to promote economic cooperation, Lithuania is interested in signing an agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Vice-Minister presented S.Alkalaj with a copy of the Resolution of the Seimas on the Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide. The resolution was adopted by the Parliament of Lithuania on 20 May 2010. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina invited a representative from Lithuania to attend the 15th anniversary commemoration of the tragic events in Srebrenica.
