Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister discusses migration issues in Brussels

On 15 March in Brussels, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis participated in the EU’s General Affairs Council, which prepared the next European Council. The EU leaders will meet on 17 and 18 March to discuss cooperation with Turkey in order to address the migration crisis.

Karoblis noted that in order to stop the great migratory flow to the Greek Islands, it was necessary to reach a solid agreement with Turkey aimed at staunching the flow of migrants to Europe, combating human trafficking and contributing to the protection of Europe’s external borders. The European Union is ready to help Turkey and advance further cooperation, which would be based on the existing principles of the EU.

Lithuania speaks in favour of providing support for Greece, which is struggling to handle a large influx of refugees.

The European Commission presented the Communication on investing in jobs and growth - maximising the contribution of European Structural and Investment Funds. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister highlighted the importance of Cohesion Policy and ensuring continuity in it.
