Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and U.S. representative discuss Jewish cultural heritage
On 14 April in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekešius met with the U.S. Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Nicholas Dean.
The guest from the United States of America commended Lithuania’s efforts to safeguard Jewish cultural heritage. He took interest in possibilities to present Jewish culture in Lithuania and in the restitution of Jewish private property.
Bekešius briefed Dean about Lithuania’s efforts related to maintenance of Jewish cemeteries, the establishment of the Jewish Cultural Route Association in Lithuania that aimed to develop a programme of Jewish cultural tourism in the country, YIVO’s Vilna Collections project with the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Central State Archives to digitise archival collections as well as the restoration of citizenship to Litvaks.
Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister also informed the U.S. official about the activities of the Commission that was set by the Chancellor of the Government to deal with matters related to the culture and history of the Lithuanian Jews. Bekešius, who is a member of the Commission, assured the U.S. official that the Commission was ready to address various issues, which were important for the Jewish community.
