Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and Supreme Commander of Swedish Armed Forces discussed security cooperation

On 26 February, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas met with the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, General Micael Bydén, who was visiting Lithuania. The meeting focused on the intensive cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden in the field of security and defence, security situation in the region and international threats.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the recognition of the restoration of an independent state of Lithuania this year, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister thanked Sweden for its long-term support for the formation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and close cooperation in many other fields. Krivas emphasized that cooperation with Sweden and other Nordic and Baltic countries was among the main priorities of Lithuania.

The participants of the meeting stressed the importance of strengthening the principle of solidarity in the European Union and increasing mutual understanding of threats facing our countries.

“We are facing very similar threats, so we have to strengthen cooperation to ensure security in the region. Sweden is a very important partner. We are interested in close relations between Sweden and NATO,” said Krivas.

The officials discussed international threats that had to be taken into account when drafting an EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy.

Krivas also highlighted that for Lithuania it was particularly important to pay consistent and systematic attention to the Eastern Partnership policy, political and expert support for Ukraine, issues related to a unified EU policy toward Russia.
