Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and Finland’s new Ambassador discuss strengthening of bilateral cooperation
On 6 October, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas met with the new Ambassador of Finland to Lithuania Christer Gustaf Michelsson and discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Finland in the fields of economy, energy and regional security, and other areas.
Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister stressed that Finland was a close neighbour of the region, and an important partner of Lithuania. Back then, when Lithuania strived to regain its independence, Finland was always a model for the country. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Finland.
The mutual economic relations are developing dynamically – Finland is the seventh largest investor in Lithuania, the trade is growing, Finland is second among the Nordic countries according to the number of tourists visiting our country. Moreover, prospects for further economic cooperation between Lithuania and Finland are promising indeed. The cooperation between the two countries is gaining special importance in the implementation of strategically significant projects related to the connected transport and energy networks in the Baltic region.
Germanas stressed the importance of close cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries, especially in the field of strengthening of regional cooperation and energy security. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister drew the Ambassador’s attention to the country’s concerns over the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
In the meeting, the interlocutors also discussed the key items on the EU agenda, including the challenges that migration posed, international threats, ties with Russia, and the situation in Ukraine. The interlocutors also discussed support to the Eastern Partnership countries as these countries aimed to gain a European perspective.
After holding the meetings at the Foreign Ministry, the Ambassador of Finland presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
