Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Trade discuss possibilities for promotion of bilateral economic cooperation

On 5 September in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis and the Minister of Foreign Trade of Ecuador Juan Carlos Cassinelli discussed Ecuador’s joining the EU’s existing accord with Colombia and Peru. The Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Trade requested Lithuania’s assistance in ensuring Ecuador’s smooth accession to the trade agreement in order to achieve a more rapid application of the agreement.

Ecuador’s accession to the free trade agreement would create better conditions for trade and better access to the Ecuadorian market for Lithuanian and EU exporters, as well as a stable and predictable trade and investment environment. Ecuador and the EU have signed a bilateral preferential trade agreement, which will expire at the end of 2016.

Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister also stressed that Ecuador should comply with its WTO obligations and remove barriers to trade with the EU. The Ecuadorian Minister ensured that trade restrictions were being removed and that Ecuador sought to lift the tax that applied to imports from third countries at the end of the year.

In the meeting, the representatives of the two countries also discussed the bilateral economic cooperation, possibilities for investment and the development of bilateral trade.
