Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and Czech Deputy Minister discuss bilateral and regional cooperation, region’s security situation

On 26 February, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas took part in the Lithuanian-Czech political consultations in Vilnius and coordinated positions on topical issues related to security policy, NATO and the EU with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jakub Kulhánek. The participants of the meeting also discussed the agenda of bilateral and regional cooperation.

The officials noted that it was necessary to work together to implement assurance measures agreed upon at NATO’s Summit in Wales and to adequately prepare for the Warsaw Summit. The participants of the Summit agreed that NATO should strengthen its ability to defend itself, while pre-positioned equipment and presence of the allied forces in the region were essential for deterring threats to NATO’s eastern and southern flanks.

According to Krivas, it is important for Lithuania to agree on further assurance measures in the Baltic region in Warsaw this July. Lithuania also expects that participants of the Summit will announce about the full implementation of the NATO Readiness Action Plan and further adaptation measures aimed to strengthen the Alliance’s collective defence and deterrence.

The Lithuanian representative emphasized the importance of issues related to the EU’s eastern neighbours, support for Ukraine, the EU and NATO’s unified and coordinated policy toward Russia.

The participants of the Lithuanian-Czech political consultations also discussed energy security and migration issues.
