Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry expresses concerns over an incident in Northern Ireland

In response to a hate crime which was committed against Lithuanians in Northern Ireland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania calls on responsible authorities in the United Kingdom to take all necessary measures to prevent such hate crimes from happening again.

We hope that an investigation of this crime will be carried out properly and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. We must fight against all possible manifestations of hate scrupulously and prevent xenophobia from replacing hospitality and tolerance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the Embassy of Lithuania in the United Kingdom have contacted competent authorities in the UK immediately and collected information about the incident in Northern Ireland.

The leaders of Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry are now raising an issue concerning the increase in attacks against Lithuanian citizens in conversations with the UK officials. On 18 July in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and drew his attention to the increase in attacks. On 18 July, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekešius raised this issue in a meeting with the British Minister of State for Immigration Robert Goodwill at the Embassy of Lithuania.

Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Bekešius also plans to have a telephone conversation with the Minister Goodwill to discuss the situation.
