LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER WILL TAKE PART IN THE EU GAERC MEETING AND THE DISCUSSION ON DEMOCRACY BUILDING

On 16-17 November in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas will take part in the European Union’s General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting and discussion “New Partnerships in Democracy Building: European Union and the Community of Democracies”.

During the round table discussion at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU, possibilities for cooperation between the European Union and the Community of Democracies will be discussed.

At the GAERC meeting foreign ministers will discuss the preparation for the European Council meeting, which is scheduled for 10-11 December in Brussels and during which the institutional, economic and financial issues, as well as issues of climate change, employment and the Stockholm Programme that defines the EU priorities in the area of freedom, security and justice for the next five years, will be discussed. During the meeting, the Lisbon Strategy after 2010 and the EU Sustainable Development Strategy will also be discussed.

The Lisbon Strategy that was set out in 2000 by the European Council is the programme for structural reforms, which aims to turn the EU into the world’s most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in ten years. In the EU Sustainable Development Strategy that was adopted in 2006, seven key objectives are outlined: the climate change and clean energy, sustainable transport, sustainable consumption and production, conservation and management of natural resources, public health, social inclusion, demography and migration, and global poverty.

The foreign ministers of the EU member states also intend to analyse the development of the EU-Russia relations, issues of further cooperation with Belarus, the political and economic situation in Ukraine, support to Afghanistan, the Middle East Peace Process, the civil potential of the European security and defence policy, the cooperation between the EU and NATO.

The Ministers of National Defence and Cooperation Development Ministers will also take part in the GAERC in November.
