On 16 June, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas engaged in the round table discussion “Challenges of Democracy in Post-Communist Europe: National Identity” at Mykolas Romeris University.
In his introductory remarks, Minister V.Ušackas drew attention of the assembled to the successful experience of national independence movements in Lithuania and other Baltic States and their crucial role in the re-establishment and consolidation of the statehood. According to the Minister, this sets an example to many nations in the world.
In the opinion of V.Ušackas, searching for the national identity in post-communist countries in Europe and difficulties that arise from it present a considerable challenge in the process of democratization of those countries. Therefore, the international community has to further support the formation and strengthening of the European identity in those countries.
This round table discussion is an integral part of the programme of the international summer school for young researchers and it takes place on 14-22 June in Vilnius.
Scholars from Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, France, Slovakia and Germany are taking part in the event.
The greatest attention at the international summer school that is organised by Mykolas Romeris University is dedicated to the relation between national identity and democratization in post-communist European countries and to the research of fundamental European identity and the characteristics and problems of formation of the identities of the European nations.
