Lithuania’s Foreign Minister visits CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research

On 29 February in Geneva, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Director-General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Fabiola Gianotti and other leaders of the organization.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister reiterated Lithuania’s goal of becoming an associate member of CERN and assured that in the short run the CERN Council would receive the application from Lithuania.

During the visit, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister acquainted himself with CERN’s activities and saw the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) located near Cessy in France. The CMS is a general-purpose detector, which has a broad physics programme, including studying the Higgs boson that gives particles mass.

This is the second high-level visit of the Lithuanian leadership to CERN this year. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė paid a visit to CERN in January.

Lithuania has cooperated with CERN for more than a decade. About 30 Lithuanian scientists work on international projects curated by this organization. Some Lithuanian teachers participated in CERN’s education programmes. CERN’s travelling exhibitions – the “LHC Interactive Tunnel” and “Accelerating Science” – have been successfully presented to young people and general public in Lithuania.
