Lithuania’s Foreign Minister to attend EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels

On 15 December in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius will attend the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting. Key issues on the agenda-  Iraq, Syria. The Council will also discuss the situation in Libya, Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the fight against Ebola.  

The Ministers will debate the situation in Syria, Iraq and the whole region, the EU’s involvement and the international community’s role in resolving the Syrian crisis. As regards Iraq, the Ministers will discuss the country’s political situation, support for Iraq’s new government and the autonomous Kurdish region, the issue of foreign fighters.

The Council will discuss security and political situation in Libya and the situation in Ukraine.

On 14 December, on the eve of the Council, L.Linkevičius will attend three informal meetings of the EU’s Foreign Ministers. First of all, the Ministers will debate the Council’s new working methods. Then they will discuss the situation in Syria with Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria, and have dinner with European Commissioners for External Relations. On 15 December, before the Council, the Foreign Minister will attend the informal meeting of the Group of Friends of Ukraine. The EU’s Foreign Affairs Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin are also invited.
