LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER: THE LITHUANIAN COMMUNITY IN BELARUS IS A STRONG LINK THAT UNIFIES THE TWO NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES

During his visit to Belarus on 25 August, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with representatives from the Lithuanian community in Lida, Gervėčiai (Gervyaty) and Rimdžiūnai (Rymdziuny).

Minister V.Ušackas stressed that the Lithuanian community, which has historically developed in Belarus, is a strong link that unifies Lithuania and Belarus.

“This link must be further strengthened. It is important not just while taking care of the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but also while implementing other important projects of today,” said Minister V.Ušackas.

Minister V.Ušackas asked representatives of Rimdžiūnai (Rymdziuny) authorities to take into account the requests of local Lithuanians to solve the issues of education of Lithuanians and emphasized the necessity to ensure proper level of teaching of the Lithuanian language at the local Lithuanian school.

“Lithuania and Belarus have to pursue guaranteeing conditions for fostering national identity of Lithuanians and Belarusians living in these countries,” Minister V.Ušackas stressed.
