Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked Ukrainians who defended Lithuania’s freedom
On 13 January in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius thanked the Ukrainian citizens who defended the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania in January 1991. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that the Ukrainian squad was the only foreign volunteer unit that came to Vilnius in 1991 and helped defend the country’s key state institutions.
“We will never forget your sacrifice and the determination that you demonstrated 25 years ago to bring together likeminded people and help defend Lithuania’s freedom, despite threats to their lives. This is brave, it is symbolic and it brings our nations closer to each other. In turn, I want to assure you that we have always stood and will stand by you. By all means, we shall contribute to the preservation of Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity in the current struggle for the freedom of Ukraine,” said the Minister.
The Ukrainian citizens are attending commemorative events on the occasion of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom. On 12 January, the former squad commander Yevgen Dykiy gave a speech at the Seimas.
