LITHUANIA‘S FOREIGN MINISTER SENDS BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO THE OPPOSITION LEADER OF BURMA/MYANMAR AND NOBEL PRIZE WINNER

On 19 June, Lithuania‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis congratulated the opposition leader of Burma/Myanmar and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on her 65th birthday. Aung San Suu Kyi is currently detained under house arrest.

The Minister notes that as a current Presidency of the Community of Democracies, Lithuania supports the fight by Aung San Suu Kyi for human rights in Burma/Myanmar and urges the regime of that country to grant her freedom.

“Although you cannot celebrate your birthday in freedom, the freedom cannot be detained. Thousands of enslaved people in your country believe in freedom, admire your bravery and personal contribution into the fight for human rights“, Minister A.Ažubalis emphasized.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also reminds about the statement by Troika of the Community of Democracies which called for “the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, and initiation of a credible, time-bound political dialogue between the regime, the democratic opposition and ethnic minority leaders leading to national reconciliation, political reforms and transparent fair and democratic multiparty elections”.

Lithuania will be holding the Presidency of the Community of Democracies until June 2011. The organization joins together democracies and developing democracies.
