LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVES THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR
On 28 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas received Ambassador of the French Republic to the Republic of Lithuania Francois Laumonier. During the meeting, they discussed the scheduled visit of the Minister to Paris in February. According to the Minister V.Ušackas, the new Lithuanian Government is interested in strengthening relations with France not only in traditional areas of energy security, transatlantic relations and the neighbourhood in the East, but also to develop geographically the field of cooperation, including the regions of the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Better knowledge of these regions is especially important now, as Lithuania is getting prepared to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Lithuania also expects a more active economic cooperation with France and takes interest in France’s experience in the area of investment promotion.
During the meeting, head of the Lithuanian diplomacy also thanked for vigour activities of the French Culture Centre in Lithuania and highlighted the significance of fostering a linguistic and cultural variety. The Minister was pleased with the news that on 29 January, a company of the world-famous French theatre La Comédie Française is on tour in Lithuania.
The French Republic recognised the Republic of Lithuania de jure on 20 May 1920. Lithuania and France re-established diplomatic relations on 29 August 1991.
