LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVES THE AMBASSADOR OF INDIA
On 29 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas received Ambassador of the Republic of India Chandra Mohan Bhandari. Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy congratulated the Ambassador of India on the occasion of India’s National Day and expressed his sincere condolences on the death of former President of India Shri R.Venkataraman on 28 January.
The Ambassador of India conveyed a letter of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India Pranab Mukherjee to Minister V.Ušackas, informed him about the results of investigation of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that whole international community should pay effort seeking to avoid repetition of similar attacks and to punish all persons, who were involved in organising the terrorist attacks.
Minister was glad that bilateral relations between Lithuania and India were revived, which was also influenced by the fact that the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania opened in Delhi in 2008. V.Ušackas highlighted that for Lithuania India was one of the priority countries in Asia and welcomed strengthening economic relations.
“I am glad that the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with India was initialled and I hope that we will sign it in the nearest future. We are prepared to continue deepening our cooperation,” said Minister V.Ušackas.
Minister V.Ušackas also drew attention to the fact that the first Hindi textbook in the Lithuanian language was recently published.
Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy conveyed his verbal invitation to India’s Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways to take part in the Meeting of Transport Ministers (ASEM) on 19 October 2009 in Vilnius.
ASEM is an informal Asia-Europe dialogue and cooperation process, which unites 27 European Union member states and the European Commission, 16 Asian countries and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat.
The Ambassador of the Republic of India to the Republic of Lithuania resides in Warsaw.
Lithuania and India established diplomatic relations on 27 April 1992.
