LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVES LATVIA’S NEW AMBASSADOR
On 5 October in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis received Latvia’s new Ambassador to Lithuania Mārtiņš Virsis. During the meeting, the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador discussed relations between Lithuania and Latvia. Foreign Minister A.Ažubalis expressed trust that the newly elected Latvian Parliament (Saeima) would ratify the maritime border agreement between Latvia and Lithuania, also mentioned the Lithuanian and Latvian project for teaching a second Baltic language at border schools in Lithuania and Latvia.
The Lithuania-Latvia Forum has been implementing this project since 2006. Studying the second Baltic language helps pupils to learn more about the culture and history of the neighboring country, also to expand joint activities in various fields that are important for Lithuanian and Latvian schools. Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs partially finances this project and also some other initiatives of the forum.Latvia’s Ambassador shared his insights into the formation of the new government of Latvia, took interest in Lithuania’s position on various foreign policy issues.
Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy wished M.Virsis success in further strengthening the cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia.
M.Virsis is Latvia’s sixth Ambassador to Lithuania.
