LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVED THE NEW APOSTOLIC NUNCIO

On 20 May, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas received new Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi. During the meeting, the Minister and the Apostolic Nuncio discussed cooperation in protecting human rights and freedoms, promoting trust among nations and religions, seeking to guarantee the implementation of international humanitarian law. Minister V.Ušackas stressed that Lithuania and the Holy See were spreading tolerance and freedom of religion in the Eastern European countries.

Minister V.Ušackas and Archbishop L.Bonazzi discussed the visit of the Minister to the Vatican that is scheduled on 2-3 June. The Minister will meet with the Vatican’s Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone and Secretary for Relations with States Dominique Mamberti.

Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop L.Bonazzi was born in Northern Italy, Bergamo province, in 1948. He was frocked in 1973. After graduating from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, which trains the diplomats of the Holy See, priest L.Bonazzi served in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Africa, Europe, South and North America for two decades. In 1999 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti and consecrated Bishop. From 2004 he was head of the Apostolic Nunciature in Cuba.

The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop L.Bonazzi, who resides in Lithuania, will be the representative of the Holy See to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
