LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER PARTICIPATED IN THE SEMINAR ON THE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP AT VILNIUS UNIVERSITY

On 17 September, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas participated in the international seminar “Eastern Partnership - Opportunities and Challenges for Enhanced Cooperation between the EU and the Eastern Neighbours“ at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University.

The Minister spoke about the practical implementation of Eastern Partnership and its potential to contribute to the stability and welfare in the EU's eastern neighbours.  The Eastern Partnership was launched on 7 May 2009 at the EU Summit in Prague.

The Eastern Partnership programme aims to build a more coherent cooperation between the EU and its Eastern neighbours Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, as well as to encourage a better integration of these countries. The EU will develop relations with these countries on individual basis, according to their aspirations and progress. The Eastern Partnership provides for free trade areas, visa facilitation measures, additional funding and promotion of multilateral cooperation.

The seminar was organized by Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Sweden in Lithuania, the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University, Centre for Eastern Geopolitical Studies and Eastern Europe Studies Centre.

The prerequisites for the success of the Eastern Partnership and the potential obstacles to the implementation of this programme are discussed, measures of Eastern Partnership’s political impact are evaluated at the two-day seminar.

Representatives from Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the Seimas (Parliament), diplomats from the EU Member States and the Eastern Partnership countries, politicians, academia, representatives of non-governmental organizations, journalists and political science students are attending the seminar.
