LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER PAID A VISIT TO KALININGRAD

On 3-4 July Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas paid a visit to Russia’s Kaliningrad Region. During the meeting with Governor of Kaliningrad Region Georgiy Boos, the Minister discussed issues of bilateral cooperation. Possibilities to sign in the nearest future an agreement on travelling of residents of border areas and to make further steps aiming at liberalizing the visa regime between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Region were discussed. The officials also spoke about the ways of starting to implement the Agreement on the Navigation in the Curonian Lagoon and the Watercourses of the Republic of Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation in the nearest future.

During the meeting, the Minister and the Governor agreed to cooperate more actively in implementing the energy strategies of Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Region, and to organise in the nearest future the meeting of representatives from the Lithuanian and Russian ministries of Energy. The meeting would be dedicated to discuss the integration with the Western European Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE), electricity supply provision and other issues that are important for both sides.

While discussing the cooperation in the area of transport, V.Ušackas and G.Boos dedicated the most attention to the implementation of joint projects of infrastructure and attracting freight to the seaports of Klaipėda and Kaliningrad.

The Minister invited representatives from the transport business of the Kaliningrad Region to take part in the Asia-Europe Transport Development Forum on 19 October in Vilnius.

The Minister and the Governor agreed to initiate a joint programme, which would be dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lithuanian classical writer Kristijonas Donelaitis in 2014.

Continuing series of the events marking Lithuania’s millennium in Kaliningrad, the Minister and the Governor opened an exhibition of graphic arts “The Way” at the Museum of the World Ocean.

During his visit to the Kaliningrad Region, the Minister of Foreign Affairs visited the Memorial Museum of Kristijonas Donelaitis in Tolminkiemis (Chistye Prudy), where he met with head of Gumbinė District (Gusev, the Nesterovsky District), and representatives from the Lithuanian Community of the Kaliningrad Region.

On Saturday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Lithuanian Community of the Kaliningrad Region, heads from the City Municipality and representatives from the authorities of the region and delegation from Neringa met the crew of the Ambersail yacht - – the participants of the 11th leg of “The Millennium Odyssey” – who had reached the last seaport abroad before returning to Lithuania.
