LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER MET WITH THE COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE
On 20 October in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas and Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Thomas Hammarberg discussed ways to enhance the human rights protection in Lithuania and issues related to country’s national minorities.
The implementation of recommendations that the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe had made for Lithuania was reviewed during the meeting. The Minister and the Commissioner discussed education in the languages of national minorities, including the Romani language, and the implementation of the Roma Integration Programme.
During the conversation, Th.Hammarberg was positive about the human rights situation in Lithuania and was interested in Lithuania’s contribution into the reconstruction of Afghanistan, as well as guaranteeing security in it.
The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe started his visit to Lithuania on 19 October. In Vilnius, he also took part in a seminar on the topic of non-discrimination.
