LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

On 26 January in Brussels during the meeting with Secretary General of the Council of the European Union Javier Solana, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas discussed perspectives of the EU relations with Belarus.

During the conversation, Minister V.Ušackas informed J.Solana about his visit to Minsk in the end of December 2008, talks with head of the President’s Administration Uladzimir Makey and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Martynov.

Minister V.Ušackas indicated that Belarus should be allowed a possibility to draw closer to the EU, for this purpose the newly created EU Eastern Partnership initiative could be used.

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy also drew attention to the fact that closer relations between Belarus and the EU should have a positive impact on the development of an open society and respect for democratic principles in Belarus, the rule of law and activities that are based on free market principles applied to the EU businessmen.

Minister V.Ušackas informed J.Solana about Lithuania’s intentions to send one Lithuanian official to the EU Border Assistance Mission in Rafah, Palestine.
