Lithuania’s Foreign Minister meets with Japanese patrons of Lithuanian Olympians

On 25 September in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Mayor of Hiratsuka City Katsuhiro Ochiai, who is visiting Lithuania.

In 2016, Hiratsuka and the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania signed a memorandum on the establishment of the Lithuanian Olympians’ training base in the city of Hiratsuka, Japan, in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. A separate unit for cooperation with Lithuania and preparation for the Olympic Games was set up in the city’s municipality. In addition, shelves of books on Lithuania are located in the city library. There are also plans to open a Lithuanian cultural centre in the park with training bases.

“I believe that the effort of the city of Hiratsuka will further strengthen bilateral ties between Lithuania and Japan, and that Lithuania will become even better known in Japan,” said Linkevičius.

The delegation from Hiratsuka has also visited Alytus, Kaunas and Panevėžys. On 22 September, the Mayor of Alytus City Municipality Vytautas Grigaravičius and the Mayor of Hiratsuka City Katsuhiro Ochiai signed a letter of intent on cooperation. From now on the two cities will cooperate in the fields of business and trade, science and technology, education and healthcare, culture and arts, sports and tourism development, ecology and rational use of natural resources, as well as youth policy.
