Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: “We wish to see an active and effective Russian opposition abroad and in Russia itself”

On 26 May, the annual Vilnius Russia Forum ended, which focused on the most pressing issues related to Russia: aggression against Ukraine, domestic policy issues, human rights situation, and development trends.

Just like last year, the participants discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, increasing pressure on the Kremlin’s criminal regime and personally Putin, Russia’s development trends and the deteriorating human rights situation in this country.

“The threat posed by Russia under the Kremlin regime remains as long as the regime stays in power. No one in Europe or the world can feel safe. Therefore, it is important to continue to assist Ukraine fully. But at the same time, we wish to see an active opposition to Putin not only abroad but also in Russia itself. The opposition should want and seek changes in Russia’s political system. Only in this way can there be a real alternative to Putin’s regime, which we don’t see right now,” said Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis.

Prominent Russian civil society representatives, human rights defenders, experts from international analytical centres, journalists, academics and politicians attended the Forum.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several partners in Lithuania and abroad have co-organized the meetings of the Vilnius Russia Forum since 2014.
