Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis: We must start the restoration and reconstruction of Ukraine
On 6 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Kiyv, where together with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and Latvia Eva-Maria Liimets and Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
The meetings focused on security situation in Ukraine and in the region, and on Ukraine’s resistance to the brutal military aggression of Russia. “This visit is an expression of our countries’ solidarity with Ukraine. We understand that Ukraine and its people are fighting not only for their own freedom, but also for ours. Thus, together with our partners, we will continue providing support to Ukraine in its fight against Russia's aggression,” Landsbergis said.
“To stop Russia's aggression, further military support to Ukraine and the strengthening of sanctions are needed. At the same time, we must look to the future and start the restoration and reconstruction of Ukraine. We will continue to work with our partners and coordinate actions in these areas," Landsbergis said.
At the meeting with the President of Ukraine, the Baltic Foreign Ministers stressed their support for Ukraine’s membership of the European Union. “We have to make it clear that the EU’s door is not only open to Ukraine, but that it will be granted the status of a candidate country. Hopefully, we will be able to consolidate this at the EU summit in June,” Landsbergis said.
The Foreign Ministers of the Baltic states and Ukraine discussed international cooperation aimed at holding Russia accountable for the crimes it had committed. The Foreign Ministers underlined that they would support every effort by the international community to hold those responsible for Russian war crimes to account and highlighted the practical assistance that was already being provided in evidence collection.
Together with his Baltic counterparts, Landsbergis also visited Irpin, where they discussed actions of the EU and international community in support of Ukraine’s reconstruction with Ukraine representatives.
