Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: We are witnessing the times of great turmoil. If we don’t help Ukraine today, there will be even more turbulence and much less respect for the rules-based international order

On 1 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh in Ramallah. “We are witnessing the times of great turmoil. If we don’t help Ukraine today, there will be even more turbulence and much less respect for the rules-based international order,” Landsbergis said at the meeting with the Prime Minister.

Landsbergis and Shtayyeh discussed the situation in the Middle East and the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine for the international community.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy also met with the Minister of National Economy Khaled Osaily and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Amal Jadou.

Lithuanian and Palestinian delegations discussed the development of bilateral relations and economic cooperation, as well as the sharing of Lithuania’s experience with Palestine in digitalisation, e-governence solutions and green transformation.

“Lithuania has an exceptional experience in building a democratic state. Our state withstood attempts to erase our historical memory and tank attacks. We have made great progress over the past 30 years, we are in the EU and NATO. But all this has not happened on its own, therefore, we may share our experience of transformation with the Palestinian people and institutions. The upcoming visit of a Palestinian business delegation to Lithuania testifies to this,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister said.

Lithuania has implemented 15 development cooperation projects in Palestine since 2009. Ongoing projects aim to promote the digital skills of Palestinian women and girls in business and agriculture.

In 2019-2022, Lithuania successfully implemented the first EU Twinning project in Palestine. Negotiations are also underway on the possibility of adapting Lithuania’s digital progress and deposit system in Palestine.
