Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis to visit Tokyo, Japan

On 6-7 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis is paying an official working visit to Japan, where he will meet with Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Takako Suzuki and Hirofumi Nakasone, Chairman of Japan-Lithuania Friendship Diet Members’ League.

The meetings with the leaders of the largest Japanese corporations and business federation will focus on further cooperation to develop strategic infrastructure projects in Lithuania in the fields of energy and transport, as well as to attract investments in order to expand economic ties between Lithuania and Japan.

The meetings will discuss the development of bilateral relations and regional security, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and its impact on global security and international markets, prospects for cooperation to reconstruct Ukraine, as well as opportunities for cooperation with Japan in the Indo-Pacific region, with a view to actively contribute to the maintenance of the rules-based international order.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister will also meet with representatives of the Lithuanian community in Japan.
Japan is Lithuania’s most important partner in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as Lithuania’s priority export and inbound tourism market, and an important partner for cooperation in the fields of research, technology and innovation. In 2020, the bilateral trade between Lithuania and Japan reached EUR 165.6 million. On 20 December 1922, Japan recognised Lithuania de jure. Thus, this year marks the 100th anniversary of relations and friendship between Lithuania and Japan.
