Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis to pay his first bilateral visit to Spain

On 18-20 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania  Gabrielius Landsbergis will visit Madrid, the Kingdom of Spain. Landsbergis will meet with Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares Bueno, the President of the  Congress of Deputies Meritxell Batet Lamaña, and members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Congress of Deputies. It is the first bilateral visit of Landsbergis to Spain.

During the visit, the Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Spain will sign a memorandum on regular consultations between the two countries regarding foreign policy issues.

Landsbergis will also visit an exhibition featuring original historical documents relating to bilateral relations stored in the Spanish archives,  dedicated to the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Spain.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister will present opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation and investment at an event with Spanish business representatives. Lithuania aims to strengthen economic cooperation with Spain in high-tech areas and to cooperate in reconstruction projects in Ukraine. Since 2021, exports of Lithuanian-origin goods and total exports to Spain have increased. Comparing trade data for the three quarters of 2021 and 2022, in 2022, total exports to Spain grew by 79 % (up to EUR 510 million0, while exports of Lithuanian-origin goods increased by 85 % (up to EUR 423 million).

On 19 December, Lithuanian and Spanish diplomacy heads will participate in a public academic discussion entitled “Looking to the East without losing the South. Common threats and challenges facing Lithuania and Spain in a new European geopolitical scenario”.
