On 6 October, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima Daiga Mierina, who is visiting Vilnius. The meeting focused on assistance to Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s aggression, the security situation in the region and the importance of tightening sanctions on Russia, cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia in implementing the Rail Baltica project, the issue of illegal migrants at the Latvian-Belarusian state border, and other relevant issues of bilateral relations.

“I do not doubt that we will continue deepening our close cooperation. We will pay constant attention to the security of the Baltic region, which we ensure together with NATO partners, and we will continue to strengthen and mobilise support to Ukraine. Ukraine’s victory in the war launched by Russia is necessary for the Ukrainians and all of us. I am sure that we will remain unwavering supporters of Ukraine. The security of Lithuania and Latvia, and the security of the entire region, depends on Ukraine’s victory. Therefore, we must preserve the unity of the West and the much-needed patience and ensure Ukraine’s victory over the aggressor,” Landsbergis said.

The Foreign Minister congratulated Mierina on her election as the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima on 20 September, wished her the best of luck in her new position and welcomed the intensive and warm relations between Lithuania and Latvia.
