Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis met with Khodorkovsky, discussed challenges facing democratic opposition and civil society
On 18 October, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis met with one of the leaders of the Russian opposition and the founder of the Open Russia movement Mikhail Khodorkovsky, to discuss the short-term goals, operational and unity challenges facing Russia’s democratic opposition and civil society.
According to Landsbergis, the Kremlin is involved in external aggression against Ukraine and continues to brutally destroy Russia's civil society.
“The threat posed by Russia under the Kremlin regime remains, and no one in Europe or the world can feel safe in its presence. Therefore, it is important to continue to assist Ukraine fully. But at the same time, we want to see an active opposition to Putin not only abroad but also in Russia itself, which would not only want to but also seek changes in Russia’s political system. Only in this way can there be a real alternative to Putin’s regime,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister said.
Khodorkovsky sincerely thanked representatives for creating a suitable environment for civil society representatives persecuted by the Russian regime, journalists who found refuge in Lithuania and support for democracy, the rule of law and justice.
Khodorkovsky also accepted the invitation to attend the annual Vilnius Russia Forum, which will take place for the 10th time in spring 2024.
