Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis met with Balakrishnan: “We must remain vigilant. Russia’s desire to destabilise the situation does not end in Europe”

On 27 October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Singapore, where he met with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan. Landsbergis noted that it was in the common interest of the EU and the Indo-Pacific to ensure that the rules-based international order remained resilient and could withstand geopolitical and economic shocks.

“In Lithuania’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, we see Singapore as an important like-minded partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and we wish to intensify a political dialogue to strengthen the rules-based order together,” Landsbergis said.

“We live in turbulent times. Whether it is a brutal war that Russia is fighting against its sovereign neighbour Ukraine, violence in the Middle East or growing uncertainty in the region, all the signs show our common interest in uniting around a system of rules that ensures the security and well-being of the people of both Europe and Southeast Asia,” Landsbergis underlined.

According to the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy, in a changing geopolitical reality, the political partnership must be complemented by economic cooperation between reliable partners in opening new markets and seeking mutual investment. Therefore, Lithuania wishes to attract more Singaporean investments in the promising sectors of Lithuania – biotechnology, fintech, software and IT services.

In Singapore, the Foreign Ministers also discussed support for Ukraine and reviewed the impacts of the Russian war on regional and global security.

2023 marks the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Singapore.

From 24 to 31 October, the Foreign Minister, together with the Lithuanian business delegation, is visiting Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.
