Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: “Lithuania steps up cooperation with Gulf countries”
On 9-10 October, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis is visiting Oman’s Sultanate, where he attends a meeting of the 27th session of the EU-GCC Joint Ministerial Council to discuss significant security challenges.
“The EU-GCC Joint Ministerial Council meeting offers a good opportunity to discuss global security and assess strategies to tackle the ongoing instability,” Landsbergis said.
On 9 October, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister met with the event host, Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.
“Lithuania and Oman enjoy an exclusive partnership and friendship. We are grateful for Oman’s strong support for the inscription of Kaunas modernist architecture on the UNESCO World Heritage List”, Landsbergis said.
During the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of tourism was also signed, which will allow the development of this promising direction of cooperation even more successfully.
The meeting with Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah discussed prospects for developing the bilateral political and economic agenda. Landsbergis invited the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister to visit Lithuania in 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Kuwait.
In addition, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister had the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani.
“We appreciate your support at the United Nations in calling for an immediate end to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine,” Landsbergis noted.
The main focus of the bilateral meeting was the development of economic relations. Qatar is a rapidly developing market favouring Lithuanian food exporters, high-tech, renewable energy sources and processed wood exports.
Qatar is the world’s largest exporter of liquefied gas and the fourth exporter of natural gas.
The meeting with the Minister of State for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates Reem Ebrahim Al Hashimy took place at the initiative of the UAE. It focused on measures for the development of bilateral economic cooperation.
All bilateral meetings discussed the global implications of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, prospects for expanding cooperation in high-tech and digitalisation, cybersecurity, energy and green technologies, and collaboration in multilateral formats. In addition, there was an exchange of views on Israel’s war with the terrorist group Hamas and topical security issues in the Middle East region.
Landsbergis also met with the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Oman Anees Issa Al Zadjali. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked him for his significant support for the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Oman, his long-term support to Lithuanian businesses, and his valuable assistance to Lithuanian delegations visiting Oman.
It is the first official visit of Landsbergis to Oman. On 21 February 2022, Landsbergis attended the 26th session of the GCC-EU Joint Council and Ministerial Meeting in Brussels.
