Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: Lithuania and Japan enter a new century of friendship as strategic partners

On 21 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis received the Ambassador of Japan to Lithuania Tetsu Ozaki and handed a letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Yoshimasa Hayashi. The letter welcomes the longstanding friendship between Lithuania and Japan and the breakthrough in bilateral relations. Lithuania and Japan celebrated a centenary of their diplomatic ties this year and announced a strategic partnership.

At the meeting with Ambassador Ozaki, Landsbergis discussed common goals that deepened cooperation between the two countries and helped to overcome global challenges.

“The Strategic Partnership highlights the indivisibility of security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. This partnership will help strengthen our cooperation in defending the rules-based international order and our common, fundamental, democratic and human values. The new phase also offers Lithuania and Japan wider opportunities for economic cooperation, especially in the field of trade and investment,” said Landsbergis.

Lithuania and Japan established their diplomatic relations on 20 December 1922. The two countries organized a series of events this year to celebrate the centenary of their bilateral ties.
