Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis in Sweden: “We take seriously existential threats to European peace and security”

On 24 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Sweden, where he met with the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and members of the Riksdag (Parliament).

Politicians discussed deterrence and defence measures to strengthen security in the Baltic Sea region.

“Both global and European geopolitical challenges – Russia’s war against Ukraine, security of strategic infrastructure and energy independence have brought the Baltic and Nordic countries closer together, so we will continue to work together to strengthen regional cooperation formats, especially in the area of regional security,” Landsbergis said.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy noted that the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) format played an important role. According to him, NB8 countries similarly assess existential threats facing the region. Therefore, we must persuade partners to mobilise and continue their support to Ukraine.

“NB8 is a community, built on the foundation of common values, a place where there is no need to negotiate support; very few of such formats remain,” Landsbergis said.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said it was necessary to isolate the aggressor, Russia, further and curb its ability to continue the war.

“We must join all our efforts – political, diplomatic, military. The security of the European continent, of which Ukraine is an integral part, will only be beefed up by acting together as a value-based union,” Landsbergis said during the visit, stressing the importance of the EU’s agreement on financial and military support to Ukraine.
