Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis extends his condolences over the passing of the former leader of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis expresses his deep condolences over the passing of the first head of state of independent Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich.

“My sincere condolences to the family and freedom-loving people of Belarus on the passing of the first head of state of independent Belarus, who aimed to build a democratic state,” Landsbergis said.

Shushkevich was the first head of state of independent Belarus, elected in a democratic election. In December 1991, Shushkevich together with the then Russian and Ukrainian leaders declared that the Soviet Union had ceased to exist.
