Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis discusses regional security with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Bettel
On 5 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel, who is visiting Lithuania. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Justice and Culture of Luxembourg Sam Tanson and the Minister of Culture of Lithuania Simonas Kairys.
The meeting focused on the response of the European Union and NATO countries to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, regional security issues, the EU's energy policy, bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Luxembourg, including the cooperation between Kaunas and Esch-sur-Alzette — the European Capitals of Culture for 2022.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister underlined the responsibility of European countries in stopping Russia's aggression and in implementing decisions, and thanked Luxembourg for participating in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania. “The solidarity of the EU countries is essential to ensuring our common security. We, like no one else, fully understand the value of an international order based on democratic values. Only by acting together can we influence global processes,” Landsbergis said.
“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine poses a direct threat not only to the countries bordering Russia, but also to Europe as a whole. The goal of all of us is therefore to help Ukraine. At the same time, we must reduce the dependence of EU countries on Russian energy in order to resist Russia's blackmail," Lithuania's Foreign Minister said.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Luxembourg.
