Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis discussed sanctions against Russia and Belarus and Ukrainian grain exports with the European Commission Vice-President Dombrovskis and Commissioner Urpilainen

Today, on 22 May, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis and Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen in Brussels.

“The European Union must continue to make every effort to open even more supply routes to Ukrainian grain,” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said at a meeting with Dombrovskis.

The Foreign Minister also met with Commissioner Urpilainen and discussed sanctions against Belarus in detail.

“Exceptions to sanctions, weakening sanctions are not the most appropriate way to address food security issues. We must not succumb to the misleading narratives of Russia and Belarus that the imposition of sanctions on fertiliser companies causes food shortages in the world. That’s not true,” Landsbergis said at a meeting with the Commissioner.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also recalled his letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Commissioner Urpilainen calling for the swift implementation of the June 2022 European Council conclusions to work to support the development of manufacturing capacity of inputs in developing countries, particularly sustainable fertilisers.
