Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis at the meeting with the UN Secretary-General: “Russia’s war must end with Ukraine’s victory. Only in this way will we ensure sustainable peace”

On 23 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres. The meeting focused on Russia’s ongoing military aggression since the 2014 invasion of Crimea, which poses a major threat to the international security system, and the international community’s response to Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine last February.

The Foreign Minister stressed that Lithuania would continue to actively contribute to the efforts of the international community to ensure accountability for Russian war crimes and serious violations of international law, including for the crime of aggression. Landsbergis also informed about Lithuania’s support for creating a special international tribunal, ensuring accountability also for the initiators of aggression.

“I appreciate the efforts of the United Nations in providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine addressing the issue of grain exports from Ukraine. But when it comes to the prospects of a just and lasting peace, we must understand that the only prerequisite for such peace is Ukraine’s victory,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister said.

The meeting with the highest UN official took place at the margins of the UN General Assembly’s Eleventh Emergency Special Session on Ukraine, which was held at the UN Headquarters in New York one year after Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
