Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis at the Davos Economic Forum: By creating a narrative of power, Russia seeks to navigate our decision-making process and deter us from helping Ukraine

Today, on 17 January, in the Davos World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy Gabrielius Landsbergis took part in a session entitled ‘Thinking the Unthinkable: The Risk of Nuclear Confrontation’.

“Creating a narrative of power is one of Russia’s tools to navigate our decision-making process and deter us from helping Ukraine. We cannot succumb to this narrative. Being unafraid does not mean you should be unprepared,” the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said during the discussion.

When speaking about the likelihood of a nuclear conflict, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis noted that patience, deterrence, and armament helped the West win the Cold War and led to the fall of the Soviet Union.

“The victory of Ukraine, which at the same time will de-escalate the threat of a nuclear conflict, requires the same things that once helped the West: credible deterrence, a proper focus on armaments and the arming of countries near Russia,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted.

Together with the Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA) Jiří Šedivý, the Chair of the Freedom House Board of Trustees Jane Harman and other participants, Landsbergis discussed nuclear threats escalating from Russia. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister highlighted the western power of decisiveness and the ability to create uncertainty, which Russia would not be able to calculate.
